From Brown University President Dr. Ruth Simmons’s landmark appearance at the Schomburg Library on April 8, 2004 came the formation of a Metro NYC Chapter of Brown's Inman Page Black Alumn Council. Three years later in 2007 came the formation of a Metro Philadelphia (Philly) Chapter.
Our mission is to strengthen Brown University by establishing a productive interaction between current black Brown students, black alumni, faculty, and staff in the New York City and Philadelphia metro areas. As members of IPC-NY and IPC-Philly we're channeling our energies toward not only broadening opportunities for the Black community of Brown University in the New York City and Philadelphia Metro areas but to maximizing NYC and Philly alumni participation in the life of the University as well. In addition, we're working with organizations that further the interest of Brown University, including but not limited to The Brown Club of New York and The Brown Club of Philadelphia.
Our strategy is to energize Metropolitan area alums through various activities and events. However we don't want to have events for events sake. Nor do we want our members to be involved merely for the purpose of attending events. It is our hope that after attending an event people will be mobilized towards action--be it by donating any or all of the following: expertise, brainpower, creativity, time or money. It seems to be working because in the past two years we’ve mobilized Alums with numerous events and activities.
We want IPC-NY and IPC-Philly to be vibrant networks where we can have fun together, do business with one another, and provide mentorship and counseling for alums, current students, and prospective students. Additionally, we believe that through The Ethel Tremaine Robinson Foundation, Inc., a fully tax-exempt 501(c) (3) not-for profit founded by some IPC-NY members, we have created innovative projects to stimulate and channel strategic Black philanthropic actions for the benefit of both our beloved University and our even more beloved Black community at large. This too has been successful, as through Ethel Robinson’s grant programs we’ve raised over $13,000 in the past two years and have sent seven inner city students to Brown’s Pre-College summer programs.
Things are looking good, and the best is yet to come.
