Recognizing Our Young People II by Hayward Vereen Jr.
The City of Trenton played host to some of it's best and brightest students at the home of Roland and Taneshia Laird. The reason for the gathering, a salute to Trenton students who were recipients of scholarships and grants to attend Summer Programs at Brown University.

Trenton will send four students to programs at Brown University this summer.

Marie Moses Memorial Grant

Two middle school students from Joyce Kilmer Elementary school will spend 1 week at Brown in the SPARK program This years recipients are Shantel Missouri and Torrie Garvin. As this is the third year the Marie Moses grant has been in existence, these students follow: Nadee Lewis, Derek Dunlap Jr., Donovan Richards, Jason Levy, Erica Bradley.

Douglas Terry Memorial Grant.

In it's first year of existence, the Doug Terry grant seeks to recognize a young Black male who excels in the world of athletics as well as academics. Trenton resident and Brown Alum Roland Laird '82 organized this grant along with former athletes coached by Mr. Terry. The inaugural recipient of this years award was Miles Richardson from Willingboro, NJ.

Brown University Neuroscience Fellowship

Under the direction of Brown Professor Carlos Aizenman the Neuroscience department at Brown University applied for and received a five year National Science Foundation Grant that provides for two young people to study and research along side Professor Aizenman. The Grant allows students to spend four weeks in intensive neuroscience study in a college level course. In addition, students will have the opportunity to participate in cutting edge neurological research with Professor Aizenman.

First year recipients of the NSF Grant are Michelle Barclay and Canaan Bethea students at the Medical Arts and West campuses of Trenton Central HS.

Many Trenton residents, parents, Brown Alums and other dignitaries were present at the Laird home as Trenton paid homage to some of it’s best and brightest young people.

Respectfully submitted,

Hayward Vereen Jr
