Welcome to the Boldly Black page. These are challenging times for our people and wherever possible, we'd like Brown University to be a resource to and a beneficiary of our individual and collective efforts in the strengthening and empowering of our community.
MOVING BOLDLY FORWARD: THE ALUMNI OF COLOR INITIATIVE
The Alumni of Color Campaign Committee, the Inman Page Black Alumni Council, and the affinity groups for Latino and Asian/Asian American alumni launched a bold and unprecedented fundraising initiative in New York City on April 9, 2008 to secure the promise of Brown for current and future students of color. The event was designed to raise awareness about Brown University’s Alumni of Color Initiative—as part of the Campaign for Academic Enrichment— seeking to channel the resources and energy of thousands of alumni of color to effect transformational change. Working together, this community has targeted several core areas which, when strengthened, will ensure that Brown’s history of recognizing and encouraging diversity will not only continue, but will flourish in new and bold ways.
Speakers included the Alumni of Color Vice-Chairs: Bernicestine McLeod Bailey ‘68, Harold Bailey ‘70, and Brickson Diamond ‘93; Associate Provost & Director of Institutional Diversity Brenda Allen; Associate Professor of American Civilization Matthew Garcia; and our very own President Ruth Simmons.
The main components of this multi-dimensional $6.2 million intiative are: immediate support through the Brown Annual Fund for either unrestricted use or Investment in Diversity (which provides financial aid to students of color); and perpetual support through gifts to endowed funds for undergraduate financial aid, the Third World Transition Program, Africana Studies, and U.S. Latino Studies.
