Still I Rise: A Graphic History of African Americans - Book Signing and Discussion
Hue-Man Bookstore & Cafe
|
RSVP for this event at http://ipcrolandlaird.eventbrite.com/ With his wife Taneshia, Roland Laird (Brown '82) co-authored "Still I Rise: A Graphic History of African Americans", a critically acclaimed work with an impressive scope: the entire history of Black America told in an accessible 216 page graphic-novel form. Originally published in 1997, it was recently updated and now extends from the arrival of the first Africans in 1619 right through to Senator Barack Obama's groundbreaking presidential campaign. Compared by many to Art Spiegelman's Maus, "Still I Rise" is a breathtaking achievement that celebrates the collective African-American memory, imagination, and spirit and the book has been embraced by colleges and schools throughout the country. "Still I Rise" was re-released on February 3, 2009. About the Author: Roland Laird is a critically acclaimed author with a passion for his culture and his community. In October 2008, at the height of the U.S. financial crisis, Roland left his position as a VP of Technology at a wholly-owned subsidiary of a Global Fortune 100 company to grow his near 20-year-old side business Posro Media into the country's leading convergent entertainment company specializing in African American culture. Roland also co-founded the New York chapter of Brown University's Inman Page Black Alumni Council in 2005.

Film Screening of Salud
|
| Dear Friends and Colleagues,
As many of you know, I recently had the opportunity to go to Cuba on a medical education tour. I went with an organization called MEDICC (Medical Education Cooperation with Cuba) which is a non-profit organization working to enhance cooperation among the US, Cuban and global health communities (for more information you can check them out at:http://www.medicc.org). On April 19th, MEDICC is holding a fundraiser, in collaboration with the International Planned Parenthood Foundation, to screen a film titled Salud. This film tells the compelling story of the Cuban healthcare system, and its impact on healthcare for poor people throughout the Third World. After the screening there will be a panel discussion of physicians who recently went to Cuba featuring myself, Ann Arthur (a Brooklyn-based ophthalmologist -who happens to also be a friend from college), and Roxana Cruz (medical director of a community health center on the lower East side). They do not charge for the use of the space and their rates for appetizers are pretty decent. I also went to an event in Central Park at 63rd and Madison, it is a rooftop rented by the Parks Department. I will contact them and try to get the price info by Wednesday. (perhaps we should try and encourage other IPC members to seize the opportunity to promote themselves and their biz to fellow alumni) III) Media Panel in the fall- tentative date - The committee is set up and Lori Pope is leading the committee -what’s the role of the event planning/fundraising committee in regards to this event? Do they need help? Who can help? IV) Other current, upfront expenses- what we can or cannot spend $$ on. (please see Roland’s emails)….i.e., can only donate to 501(c) 3 or educational institution. (Just a suggesstion VII) Do we still want to do that "Alum Contest" on the website. Nobody has responded. The webmaster suggests we take the page down. Comments?
